Gullah Geechee: From West Africa to the Lowcountry
October 11 to October 17, 2026 (Fall Break)
Join us as we travel by coach to South Carolina to explore, immerse, and learn from the Gullah Geechee, who are direct descendants of the formerly enslaved from West Africa. We will spend time in the Gullah Corridor on Hilton Head Island, St. Helena Island, Charleston, and more. While on these sea islands, we will learn about indigo dyeing, sweetgrass basket weaving, and other traditional practices, visit and stay at the Penn Center, have free time to kayak, boat, explore beaches, eat traditional Gullah food, explore authentic cultural practices of the Gullah Geechee, as well as learn and listen to traditionally influenced music.

Associated Course
All participants will take a Continuing Education course that will meet prior to travel for preparation and to build community. The cost is included in the travel program.
Students may choose to take MUS 112 Introduction to Jazz or HUM 120 Cultural Studies focusing on the Gullah Geechee.
