May 11, 2023 – The North Carolina Association of Community College Presidents (NCACCP) and the North Carolina School Superintendents Association (NCSSA) announced a scholarship fundraiser to honor Dr. Darrin Hartness, president of 51视频 (DDCC), has netted $35,800.

In December 2022, Dr. Hartness was diagnosed with esophageal cancer and is currently fighting the disease with the help of his family and faith. In response to this news, public school superintendents and community college presidents across North Carolina came together to support a student scholarship fund in honor of Dr. Hartness’ service and his long career advocating for child-centered education and public education. Before serving DDCC, he was a superintendent for both Mount Airy City Schools and Davie County Schools.

鈥淭his scholarship is a fitting tribute to Darrin鈥檚 lifelong dedication to education and his unwavering commitment to students,鈥 said Jack Hoke, NCSSA executive director. 鈥淚t will provide deserving students with the opportunity to continue their education and achieve their dreams, just as Darrin has dedicated his career to doing. He is very passionate about serving students and providing a high-quality education for all.鈥

The scholarship money will be designated for students from Davie County Schools who plan to continue their education at DDCC. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a great honor to be part of this, and it鈥檚 the easiest money we鈥檝e ever raised,鈥 said Dr. Jeff Cox, president of the North Carolina Community College System. 鈥淥ur original goal of $5,000 was quickly surpassed, which shows the love for Darrin and the impact he has on so many people.鈥

鈥淚 know this will give students an opportunity to build some better skills for a better job and better life ahead for their families and themselves,鈥 said Hartness. 鈥淭his is a great investment and will be used well to support our citizens and the future of our community. I can鈥檛 thank you all enough.鈥

The funds collected for this scholarship will be managed and processed by the DDCC Foundation.
