December 10,2025 – The 51ÊÓƵ STORM cruised to a victory against their Division III rival, the Sandhill Flyers, on Wednesday night at Brinkley Gym. They improve to 5-4 on the season and remain 3-3 in Region 10 play.
51ÊÓƵ was led by two double-double performances from forwards Tayvion Tangiora (20 points, 10 rebounds) and Nijel Howard (21 points, 14 rebounds). Jaylen Wilkerson had 16 points, Dane Stewart had 13 points, and Cam Flippen had 10 points.
The STORM set the tone quickly in the first half, outscoring the Flyers 50 -28. This was because of some efficient shooting from 51ÊÓƵ, having an impressive 51.3% field goal percentage in just the first half. The defense from the STORM also held Sandhills to shooting just 31% from the field and holding them to zero three-pointers out of seven attempts.
The second half was more of the same for 51ÊÓƵ offensively, shooting 52% from the field, but the Flyers had a better half as well, shooting 51% from the field. Even though Sandhills was only outscored by six points in the second half, it wasn’t enough to form a comeback on the STORM, especially with only one three-pointer made in the half.
The story of the game came from rebounding and 51ÊÓƵ forcing turnovers. Even though they only out-rebounded the Flyers by four, the STORM capitalized on offensive rebounding. They had 17 offensive rebounds, nine directly from Tangiora and Howard themselves.
51ÊÓƵ forced 23 turnovers and only managed to turn the ball over 15 times. Sixteen of those turnovers forced were steals, and five STORM players had multiple steals, including Flippen, Stewart, Howard, Evan Ingram and KT Tatum. Off of these turnovers, the STORM were able to score 32 points opposed to the Flyers’ nine.
51ÊÓƵ finished the game shooting 52% from the field, 33% from beyond the arch and 54% from the free-throw line. They held Sandhills to 41% from the field, seven percent from three-point range and 77% from the free-throw line.
The STORM return to action on the road against Region 10 opponent, the Louisburg Hurricanes, on Saturday, Dec. 13 at 3:00 PM EST.
